Victor Archuleta: "Dual Citizenship"--Growing Up In Two Worlds

Family
Both sides of my family trace their roots in the Santa Fé area to the 1600s. In the earlier years they were primarily farmers, builders, craftsmen, artists (wood carvers and weavers), and educators. I graduated from SFHS & NMSU and received my BA & MA in Speech & Language Pathology. I divide my time between Santa Fé and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Thank you Victor for sharing a very familiar story. I too grew up in Pojoaque, my parents worked at "The Lab". I attended Cumbres Junior High and enjoyed all that the Atomic City provided with swimming pools and beautiful schools. But I also went to elementary school at Pojoaque, with dirt floors and K-12 grade levels on one campus..I always felt like I was an Elk, not a Hilltopper....and then at Santa Fe High, a Demon (as a teen, my parents would agree)..I love your story, because it illustrates the beauty of the areas we grew up in..how we embraced both worlds we grew up sharing... but our innocence made us who we are today...and that is a very good thing. I hope we meet at an upcoming event.

I remember driving up to LA to see the wonderful history museum and seeing the signs on the sidewalk: "No spitting, no skateboarding, no vending, no standing, no bikes, no....."
then knowing it as the "secret city" I was always glad to leave town before we were detained. -

Victor, thank you so much for posting this. You have a wonderful story and were obviously given a gift--an understanding of two cultures. These are exactly the cultural remembrances we wish to document. Gracias!

Great story Victor. what a rich world we grew up in: scientists, curanderos, artists No one I know in the world outside of New Mexico has a clue. This group helps me to stay connected to that enchanted place within me. Thanks.
